While I was going through what you describe here for the first time, so much online dating takes would stick in my head like, "never settle," "you'll know if someone is right for you," "always trust your gut, don't waste time on someone if it doesn't feel right," etc, etc.
The lack of nuance and understanding of the complexities of love is just tragic nowadays.
In general you want to not tie yourself to people in that state. You will not be respected or cared for as a creature that deserves dignity, nor is it your problem to adopt. Had this happen with my most recent attempt at romance as well. Very cool person, but I like myself too much to be denigrated for the sake of their comfort.

YES! I slowly came to the realization that the vast majority of what is pushed these days as relationship/dating advice is crap.
